The History of Animal Kingdom, 2015-ongoing

comic book series

The comic book series The History of Animal Kingdom is a political satire about a nation of chickens ruled over by an owl, named Prince Hoo Hoo Hoo. Each episode follows the near continuous power struggle between the chickens and their leaders across centuries, as various political systems are imposed upon them from above. Suffering under a corrupt elite made up of the owl’s incompetent cronies – a horse, a swan, vultures and various other birds – the story follows Animal Kingdom’s transition from feudalism through to laissez-faire capitalism.

In Plague Year, the latest episode of The History of Animal Kingdom, the country is struck by a mysterious and deadly illness. Events in the fictional kingdom very loosely follow those unfolding in the real world, as the autocratic prince and his friends display a toxic combination of spectacular vanity and lack of competence as leaders. The chickens alternately rebel and despair, as Prince Hoo Hoo Hoo is distracted by such marvels as the discovery of an unusually shaped potato and being kidnapped by pirates. I started drawing Plague Year in March 2020, at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, in order to entertain my friends whom I could no longer meet in person.

Animal Kingdom: Choose Your Own Adventure (2017) is my contribution to a publication celebrating the oeuvre of the Swedish political artist Öyvind Fahlström (1928–1976). My comic turns the book itself into a game, a ‘choose your own adventure’ story interspersed among texts by other authors. Faced with a political dilemma in every scenario, the reader dictates the fate of Animal Kingdom through their decision about which page to turn to next, creating an alternate history with each forking plot line.

In the prequel to The History of Animal Kingdom, commissioned by Swiss comics magazine Strapazin, the reader learns how the country has arrived at its current condition. In this episode the Prince industrialises Animal Kingdom, but, to his consternation, the chickens respond by founding a bizarre religious cult that brings the nation’s factories to a standstill.
