Spirit Swindlers tells the story of the Scottish medium Helen Duncan, who is notorious for being the last women in Britain to be convicted under the Witchcraft Act of 1735, during World War II. The tale is narrated by Duncan’s nemesis, the psychical investigator Harry Price. It focuses on Duncan’s transformation from factory worker to famous medium – known for fantastic displays of ectoplasm at her séances – which brought her to the attention of Price’s National Laboratory of Psychical Research.
